Writer and Editor

I’m a staff writer at the Chronicle of Philanthropy, where I cover nonprofit fundraising. My reporting has explored how nonprofits are advancing the nation’s Covid-19 vaccination drive; how fundraisers are connecting with new donors on TikTok; and how to make virtual events fun.

Before joining the Chronicle, I coordinated a podcast incubator program and edited for DCist at WAMU 88.5, Washington's NPR station. I was previously the assistant managing editor at the Center for American Progress. I’ve also variously worked as a bookseller, flower farmer, slinger of artisanal bread, and server of over-priced coffee.

I earned a B.A. in environmental analysis with a minor in history from Pitzer College in Claremont, California. I’m an avid reader and enjoy long runs through Rock Creek Park, weeding in my community garden plot, and trying new recipes with my cookbook club.

You can reach me at emily (dot) haynes (at) philanthropy (dot) com. My benign musings are collected here and my serious professionalism is documented over here.
